On Saturday, September 20th, the St. Thomas Aquinas High School Marine Biology Club will proudly participate in the annual International Coastal Cleanup, a global initiative organized by the Ocean Conservancy. This is definitely no event for the Marine Biology Club to pass up because it is the 40th international cleanup , and has the most involvement from the STA Marine Biology Club members.
Armed with gloves, reusable bags, and data sheets, the club members will spend the morning cleaning a nearby coastal area, collecting pounds of trash. This will be a great start for the Marine Biology Club here at STA because it gives the members an opportunity to bond while cleaning the ocean that they deeply care for. They will also work along with the Hollywood Women’s Club and students will receive between four to five service hours for their hard work.
In the Florida heat, cleaning up trash for hours is no easy feat, but the Marine Biology Club always comes prepared. Senior club member Ariel Carmen Espinoza shared, “There’ll always be water and snacks to keep the energy up in the hot sun in every beach cleanup.” Students will be taken care of with plenty of food and hydration to keep their energy up during the cleanup.
The hands on events that the Marine Biology Club participates in create a fun, active, and exciting learning environments for the members. Picking up the trash is always better with partners. Spread the word and join the Marine Biology Club today!
