The Saint Thomas Aquinas Chess Club earned an impressive second-place finish at the Broward County District Chess Championship, showcasing the team’s skill, preparation, and competitive spirit. South Broward High School captured first place overall, while Coral Springs High School finished third.
The Raiders delivered a strong performance throughout the tournament, highlighted by three students placing among the top 10 competitors in the High School Division. Leading the way was Matthew Martinez, who secured an outstanding third-place finish. Antonio Ian followed with a seventh-place finish, while Max Martinez rounded out the Raiders’ top performers by placing tenth.
The Broward County District Championship, hosted in partnership with Chess 4 Life and the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, has provided student chess players with an opportunity to compete at a high level for more than a decade. The annual event brings together some of the strongest scholastic players in the county and celebrates strategic thinking, sportsmanship, and academic excellence.
The success of the Raiders at this year’s championship reflects the dedication and hard work of the club’s members throughout the school year. Their second-place team finish is a testament to the growing strength of the Saint Thomas Aquinas chess program.
Students interested in learning more about chess or joining the team are encouraged to attend Chess Club meetings in the Bienes Center, Room BCS, on Mondays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
