At STA, the Chess Club offers students the opportunity to challenge themselves while exploring their interests, thinking strategically, and connecting with peers who share a passion for the game. Chess provides many benefits, particularly in developing academic skills. The game strengthens concentration, reasoning, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
Mant studies have shown that chess can improve academic performance. According to the US Chess Federation, “Young teens can enhance life skills through chess, like learning from mistakes, thinking ahead, and building confidence.”
Another important aspect of chess is the friendships that form along the way, whether with an opponent or a fellow club member. Students often connect through shared strategies and discussions about the game. Chess also teaches sportsmanship. For example, players traditionally shake hands with their opponent before and after a match as a sign of mutual respect.
This year at STA, the Chess Club has focused mainly on training and developing players’ skills. Members have also participated in several county tournaments, competing against other schools. In addition, the club hosts an outreach activity called “Patio Chess,” where students can meet on the school patio to play casually. Any STA student is welcome to participate, whether they already know how to play or want to learn. Club members are available to guide beginners through the rules and strategies of the game.
The goal of the club is to encourage more students to get involved and discover the benefits of chess. It is more than just a game; it’s a way to develop critical thinking, resilience, and lifelong learning skills. Freshman Edina Theobald explained, “If you want to win, you have to think before you act. It’s a great way to practice critical thinking.”
