On March 6–7, 2026, St. Thomas Aquinas High School’s Model United Nations program proudly hosted its first RaiderMUN conference on campus. STA did not compete and instead served as conference leaders. They hosted five committees while welcoming other schools to participate. The program received help from dedicated parents and student volunteers. Students from American Heritage Broward, Monsignor Edward Pace, Pembroke Pines Charter, Doral Academy, Coral Glades, Christopher Columbus, and Fort Lauderdale High School were welcomed to the conference, with over 60 delegates participating.
This event not only engaged students in a simulation of the United Nations, but also served as a fundraiser for the Francesco Ortoleva Memorial Fund, raising over $400. Freshman Emily Tealdi stated that “events such as RaiderMUN impact beyond just the composition and the award by encouraging and nurturing skills in diplomacy, research, negotiation, and leadership.” This event was not just about volunteering to help run competitions, but also about serving the community. Mrs. Thompson, now in her third year of teaching, has stepped into a significant role this year as the new moderator for the Model UN program. She describes the program as “empowering,” noting, “It gives students a platform to find their voices and realize that their perspectives on justice actually matter.”

This year carries special weight for the club, as Mrs. Thompson took over following the passing of the previous moderator, Mr. Frank Ortoleva. Knowing how deeply beloved Mr. Ortoleva was by his students and colleagues, Mrs. Thompson is dedicated to upholding the high standards of excellence and the spirit of global citizenship that he established. Under her leadership, the program continues to be a sanctuary for student voices, honoring Mr. Ortoleva’s legacy while inspiring a new generation of leaders.
With the outstanding success of RaiderMUN’s first conference, they were able to provide a promising vision for future growth. The club has been able to achieve many accomplishments, including personal and team successes. This event served not only as an opportunity for students to contribute by giving back to the community and helping other schools, but also as an event that brings together students who are passionate about leadership, diplomacy, and making a positive impact on others.
