ALUMNI STARDOM: Asante Samuel Jr.

Asante Samuel Jr. has emerged as an inspiration for athletes across the nation. From his days wearing the blue and gold of St. Thomas Aquinas High School to donning a Chargers uniform on the big stage of the NFL, Samuel Jr.’s journey is proof that perseverance, talent, and dedication can pay off. Born into a family deeply involved in football legacy, with his father Asante Samuel Sr. being a two-time Super Bowl champion, young Asante Jr. was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps. However, instead of relying on his family’s involvement in the NFL, Samuel Jr. carved his own path through determination and hard work. His journey started on the sun-soaked fields of St. Thomas Aquinas High School. There, Samuel Jr. showcased his talent, quickly becoming a standout player. His skills and football IQ were evident from the start, earning him the respect of teammates, coaches, and opponents. Asante Samuel Jr. ‘s high school career was filled with multiple interceptions, tackles, and game-changing plays. He solidified his status as one of the most promising prospects in the country. To put that into perspective, Junior Carter Petershagen said, “Even though I played a different position, ever since Asante visited I looked up to his dedication and hard work.” His performances gained attention from college recruiters, and he committed to Florida State University, continuing his football journey at the college level.

Today, Asante plays cornerback for the Los Angeles Chargers

During his time at FSU, Samuel Jr. continued to shine, showcasing his versatility at his position. His exceptional playmaking abilities, natural instincts, and unwavering work ethic caught the eye of NFL scouts. In the 2021 NFL Draft, Samuel Jr.’s dreams came true as he was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the second round. In his rookie season with the Chargers he emerged as a vital player in the team’s defensive unit. With his lockdown coverage skills, ability of forcing turnovers, and sportsmanship on the field, Samuel Jr. quickly earned the respect of his peers and established himself as a rising star in the league. Asante Samuel Jr. shows his use of hard work, perseverance, and passion, which are all virtues reinforced here at STA. From his humble beginnings at St. Thomas Aquinas High School to gracing the gridiron of the NFL, his journey serves as an inspiration to young athletes everywhere.
