The NBA playoffs began on April 18, 2026 and the matchups are off to an exciting start. Freshman Kayden Jones agrees, saying that “the playoffs have been great to watch and very entertaining.” Several series are underway, each with competitive matchups and plenty of storylines.
The Cleveland Cavaliers currently hold a 2-0 lead over the Toronto Raptors. Cleveland’s big three of Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, and Evan Mobley have been playing at a high level. Toronto, however, has been without Immanuel Quickley, one of their best players, and the team is hoping star Scottie Barnes can help carry them. If the Raptors hope to get back into the series, they will need strong performances at home in Games 3 and 4.
The series between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets has been a dogfight, currently tied at 1-1. Denver won Game 1, while Minnesota responded with a strong Game 2 performance. Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray have led the Nuggets, while Anthony Edwards has paced the Timberwolves. Minnesota successfully stole a road win and now has home-court advantage heading into the next couple of games. If Minnesota wins games three and four they could take a commanding 3-1 series lead all while playing at home. Denver, on the other hand, needs to win at least one game on the road to get back homecourt advantage.
Another intriguing matchup is the Atlanta Hawks versus the New York Knicks, which is tied 1-1. The Knicks won Game 1, and the Hawks answered in Game 2. Jalen Brunson has led New York, while the unlikely CJ McCollum has delivered key performances for Atlanta. This series appears evenly matched and could go either way.
One of the biggest surprises so far has been the Los Angeles Lakers taking a 2-0 lead over the Houston Rockets. LeBron James at 41 years old has continued to lead the Lakers, while several role players have stepped up in the absence of stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Los Angeles has also played excellent defense, making things difficult for Houston’s struggling offense. If the Rockets want to win this series, they need to win games three and four to get a fair shot.
The Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics are tied 1-1. Philadelphia stole one road game, giving the series an interesting early twist. Jaylen Brown has led Boston, while Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe have stood out for the 76ers. The 76ers eagerly await the return of former-MVP Joel Embiid from injury to boost their offense.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are up 2-0 on the Phoenix Suns and look dominant so far. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has unsurprisingly led the Thunder the multiple blowout wins, while Devin Booker continues to carry a scrappy Phoenix team. The Suns have expressed disappointment with the officiating, and many fans are in agreement.
The Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons are tied 1-1 in another competitive series. Cade Cunningham has led Detroit, while Paolo Banchero has been the key player for Orlando after having questionable performances in Orlando’s play-in matchups. Paolo, though, has seemed to clean up his issues.
Lastly, the Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs are tied 1-1. Star Victor Wembanyama has led San Antonio, while Deni Avdija has played well for Portland. However, Wembanyama suffered a concussion in Game 2, and his status moving forward is uncertain. Portland hopes to take advantage of Wembanyama’s status and win games at home.
Overall, this has been an extremely entertaining first round, and fans are looking forward to seeing how the rest of this electric first round turns out.
