Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid
One of the most anticipated matches happened on Thursday, February 12, which was the first leg of the Copa del Rey. The participants were Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Barcelona, being the top of the table and one of the best teams of all time, was expected to grab an easy win. The match started poorly for Barcelona, when in the 6’th minute, Barcelona’s Eric Garcia scored an own goal after he passed back to Joan Garcia who missed the ball. It started to turn out even worse for Barcelona, when only in the 14’th minute, Antoine Griezmann scored, setting the score to 2-0 Atletico. Barcelona struggled to get a goal, but only 20 minutes later, Atletico’s new signing, Ademola Lookman, scored, making the score 3-0. Atletico clearly were not done yet, when again only after 14 minutes, Julian Alvarez scored, increasing their giant lead. Barcelona came out and scored no goals in the first leg, making the final score 4-0. There are many debates on how the second leg is going to turn out. Barcelona fans think that they can complete a comeback and get a big enough score to win the second leg, but many other teams think Barcelona is already finished. Freshman Cian Gleeson said that if Barcelona wants to win, they have to use great tactics and all the starting players need to be in shape as well as stating that they have no room for making mistakes.
Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad
Real Madrid were determined to win this match because it meant that they could take the top of the table again. The game started with a quick goal in the 5’th minute from Gonzalo Garcia. In the 21’st minute, Real Sociedad got a penalty and scored, making it 1-1. Shortly after, Vinicius Jr. got a penalty and scored, taking back their lead. Only six minutes later, Valverde scored. It had been only ⅓ of the game and Real Madrid already had a two goal lead on Sociedad, but in the 48’ minute, Vinius got another penalty, making it 4-1. This victory set Real Madrid over Barcelona but Barcelona still had a match against Girona to get them back up.
Barcelona vs Girona
Barcelona went against Girona, a team not known to be particularly strong. The game started off slow, with the first goal being in the 59’th minute from Cubarsi, leading Barcelona for the game. Two minutes later, Girona scored, making it 1-1. The game was closer than expected, but in the 86’th minute, Girona scored, winning them the game and setting Barcelona behind Real Madrid.
