As the boys’ volleyball season quickly approaches, Coach Virginio, STA’s Varsity Volleyball coach, has been hosting pre-season workouts available to those who wish to be on the team. Meeting every Monday and Wednesday from 3:00-4:30, this team, even though not yet officially formed, is ready to get ahead and form the chemistry and skills needed to make this team State-Champ worthy!

Twice a week Coach Virginio brings out one of his athletic trainers from RedLine Athletics, his self-owned business, where he trains athletes to better them in their sport. To begin their training, the coaches take the athletes to the practice field to warm up, stretch, and practice agility drills for 30-45 minutes. These drills help players with coordination, speed, balance, and much more. The athletes then head to the weight room where they are guided by a Redline Trainer. The workouts last for 45-60 minutes and vary day to day so the athletes can train their whole body. Freshman, and future varsity setter, Joseph Virginio, separates volleyball training from other sports by saying that “you need to focus on jumping and reactive training. [Basically, this is all] need[ed] to be an all-around good athlete.”

These team workouts don’t just make the athletes stronger; they also create a stronger connection between the players and allow them to get comfortable with each other. Connor Frye, an outside and middle hitter, says, “I think that the preseason conditioning is great. After every day in the gym, I feel like I’m building chemistry with the team and getting stronger.” While it may seem like something small, team chemistry can make all the difference. When a team is comfortable with each other it allows them to work together and perform the best that they can.
As other teams and schools prepare for the upcoming season, Coach Virginio is ready to prepare his athletes and shape his team into the best they can be. From getting stronger to building team chemistry, the Boys’ Volleyball pre-season team is ready to show their talents in all aspects of the sport of volleyball.
