Throughout the month of April, students and teachers were given the opportunity to admire artwork in the Bienes Center created by the art students at STA. The art teachers, Ms. Medina and Ms. Maradiaga, allowed students to showcase their artwork where many stepped out of their comfort zones to show off their artistic progression throughout the year. STA’s art students  presented several mediums  of work that included pottery, paint, wire, and even charcoal. 

Creating art is proven to be therapeutic, helping to lower stress levels and better the mind. It allows students to express themselves in many different ways, and they can use their emotions to help them with their art. That’s what makes art an important class to take. Students taking art classes as part of their school curriculum can be more confident than others, since they are able to communicate their thoughts and find their own sense of individuality. 

Jaelle Charles, one of the students who submitted her artwork in the art showcase, shared that she at first, felt overwhelmed when she walked into the art classroom on the first day of school. She didn’t know what to expect, and was very nervous. However, over the course of a couple of months, she felt more expressive and confident since she was able to express her feelings with her art. As it was the second time for her art to be displayed, she felt amazed at seeing her classmates’ artwork, seeing how much effort and emotion they put in it. She also added how she would be even more willing to contribute to this sort of exhibit again, since she loved the themes and creations. 

Ryan Bradley, one of the many students who were able to see the artwork, said, “I felt very amazed at seeing my friend’s and classmates’s works. It was a nice experience, and I loved all the art.” She would love to see more art displays in the future, as she was able to see many different art styles and appreciate the artists’ process when she looked at the artwork.
