On Saturday November 11, 2023, the Miami Hurricanes took on their rivals, the unbeaten, #4 ranked, Florida State Seminoles. This rivalry dates back to October 5, 1951 when the two teams first faced off on the football field. Since then, they have become fierce rivals with the Hurricanes having the most wins with 35 over the Seminoles 33.
First Half
The first big play of the game started on 3rd and 6 at the Hurricanes 37-yard line where the Seminole’s star quarterback Jordan Travis threw the ball to Markeston Douglas for a gain of 16 yards. Later in the drive, Trey Benson scored a 5-yard rushing touchdown to put the Seminoles up 7-0. On the next possession, Hurricanes quarterback Emory Williams passed the ball to Jacolby George which was originally 11 yards but after a few broken tackles, it turned into a 40-yard gain. On 3rd and 8th, Kalen Deloach sacked the Hurricanes leading to a 4th down forcing a field goal that had missed the uprights to the left. Jordan Travis went on to find Johnny Wilson for a 17-yard gain. They would end off the drive with a 33-yard field g
oal making the score 10-0 going into the second quarter. On 2nd and 21st at their 19-yard line, Hurricanes Jacolby George received a pass behind the line of scrimmage and evaded traffic to gain 26 yards. A few plays later Donald Chaney Jr. would break through a gap in the field for a gain of 25 yards. On 1st and goal at the 5 Jacolby George caught the ball over the defender to make the score 10-7. After a couple of drives, the Hurricanes had the ball with 1:20 left to go in the half. Donald Chaney Jr. rushed for 17 yards putting them inside the 15. UMiami would then kick the field goal with 27 seconds left to tie the game 10-10.
2nd Half
To start the 3rd quarter, the Seminoles tried an onside kick leading to a Hurricanes recovery for great field position. On 1st down, Mark Fletcher Jr. rushed for a 22 yard gain putting them in great field position. Due to a defensive stop, the Hurricanes settled for a 51-yard field goal to go ahead 13-10. On the next possession, Ja’Khi Douglas received a pass at their 43 and turned it into a gain of 55 yards before getting tackled at the Hurricanes 5. After a clutch stop from the Hurricanes defense, the Seminoles settled for a 22-yard field goal to tie the game 13-13. On the next possession, the Seminoles received the ball on their own 36. Johnny Wilson then received a pass and stretched the ball into a 26-yard gain. Two plays later, Trey Benson would go on to rush for a 38-yard touchdown to give the Seminoles a 20-13 lead. The Hurricanes on the next possession were forced to punt the ball. Seminoles Keon Coleman returned a punt for 66 yards putting Seminoles inside the 20. He then followed this up with a 6-yard touchdown to increase the Seminoles lead 27-13. Three possessions later on 1st and 15 at their own 15-yard line, Hurricanes’ Jacolby George received a pass in coverage and went all the way for a 85-yard touchdown to make the score 27-20 with less than 7 minutes to go in the game. On the last drive of the game, the Hurricanes were faced with a 4th and 2. Hurricanes quarterback Emory Williams put everything on the line, diving to make the first down and keeping the Hurricanes hopes alive. After two back to back passes to Colbie Young from Tyler Van Dyke, the Hurricanes were faced 4th down 3 plays later. Tyler Van Dyke threw a ball intercepted by Jarrian Jones to seal the game for Florida State 27-20.
