The 2026 NCAA National Championship took place with two teams left standing: the Michigan Wolverines and the UConn Huskies. Unlike last year’s championship matchup between the Florida Gators and the Houston Cougars, this year featured two different programs competing for the title. Both teams had impressive tournament runs, but they reached the championship in very different ways. Michigan cruised through most of its games, rarely being seriously challenged. UConn, meanwhile, had a much tougher path, coming off a thriller where they won in the final seconds over the Duke Blue Devils and another close victory against the Illinois Fighting Illini.
Heading into the championship, Michigan faced uncertainty surrounding star player Yaxel Lendeborg, the Big Ten Player of the Year, who was dealing with an injury and was questionable to play. Despite that, he suited up and gave his team an important boost. Because of his condition, the rest of Michigan’s roster needed to step up in bigger ways. When the game started, point guard Elliot Cadeau took charge, controlling the game, creating opportunities for teammates, and helping the Wolverines settle in offensively.
UConn struggled to find its rhythm from three-point range in the first half, and Michigan took advantage. The Wolverines controlled the pace, played strong defense, and entered halftime with a 33-29 lead.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Uconn struggled to make deep shots. Michigan was not shooting the ball well either, but they were dominant in the paint helping them keep control of the game. UConn continued to have trouble knocking down outside shots, while Michigan relied on physical play near the basket and strong rebounding to maintain its lead. Although the Huskies made a late push and briefly gave themselves hope, they could never fully close the gap. Michigan stayed in front the entire second half and finished the game strong.
With the victory, the Michigan Wolverines captured their first national championship since 1978, when they defeated Seton Hall Pirates. It was a historic moment for the program and a memorable finish to an outstanding season.
