The 2026 NBA Playoffs have officially arrived, with plenty of great matchups that fans around the world are looking forward to. The first round began on April 18, and several series already stand out as must-watch.
The opening matchup features the Toronto Raptors against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Toronto dominated the regular season series, winning all three games against Cleveland. Despite that, the Cavaliers enter the playoffs with home-court advantage and are still favored to win the series. The Raptors are led by Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes; Ingram has made the playoffs twice so far in his career and Barnes has never made the playoffs. The Cavaliers rely on the experienced duo of James Harden and Donovan Mitchell, both of whom have consistently reached the postseason throughout their careers.
Another highly anticipated series is between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets. Both teams have the experience and are led by superstars, with Nikola Jokic headlining Denver and Anthony Edwards leading Minnesota. These two teams played in the 2024 playoffs, where the Timberwolves narrowly won in a seven-game series. This matchup is expected to be equally competitive.
In the Eastern Conference, the Atlanta Hawks face the New York Knicks. The Knicks won the regular season series 2-1, but many people believe that the Hawks could pull off an upset since they match up really well. New York is led by Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony-Towns, while Atlanta looks to young start Jalen Johnson to make an impact. This is going to be a fun series.
The Houston Rockets take on the Los Angeles Lakers in another exciting showdown. Houston, led by superstar Kevin Durant, enters the series as the favorite. The Lakers, however, still have Lebron James, whose playoff experience makes them a dangerous opponent. Injuries could play a major role, however, as Austin Reaves and Luka Dončić’s are currently hurt and may have to sit the first round out.
The Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics are set for a competitive series after splitting their regular season 2-2. Philadelphia may be at a disadvantage, however, as Joel Embiid is expected to miss the start of the playoffs due to injury. Boston, therefore, are the favorites to win,led by Jayson Tatum and Jayleyn Brown.
In the Western Conference, the Portland Trail Blazers face the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs, led by rising superstar Victor Wembanyama, are the favorites in this matchup, while Portland will look to Deni Avdija to blaze the trail.
It has not been confirmed who the Oklahoma City Thunder or Detroit Pistons will be playing. The Thunder could face either the Golden State Warriors or the Phoenix Suns, while the Pistons will either play the Charlotte Hornets or Orlando Magic. Regardless of the matchups, both Oklahoma City, led by Shai Gilgeous Alexander, and Detroit, led by Cade Cunningham, are expected to be strong contenders.
With star power, storylines, and potential upsets across the bracket, the NBA playoffs are expected to entertain like a blockbuster movie. STA Freshman, Kayden Jones, agrees, “I’m excited the playoffs are starting and I’m looking forward to watching the games.”
