This season of the UEFA Champions League has delivered one of the biggest surprises in recent memory: a dark horse team known as FK Bodø/Glimt. While the Norwegian club showed promise last year by reaching the semifinals of the UEFA Europa League, few expected them to make a serious run in this year’s Champions League, let alone advance beyond the league phase.
Bodø/Glimt represents the small Norwegian city of Bodø, which has a population of only around 50,000 people. Their home stadium, Aspmyra Stadion, holds just about 8,000 fans. Compared with many Champions League clubs that play in massive stadiums and represent major global cities, Bodø/Glimt’s rise has been especially remarkable. Adding to the challenge, the Norwegian league season ends in late November, meaning the club must stay competitive during a long offseason while competing in Europe.
Despite these obstacles, the team has defied expectations and advanced to the Champions League Round of 16. Some analysts believe their success may be partly due to their domestic league being out of season, giving players extra time to train and prepare specifically for Champions League matches. Even so, their performances against Europe’s top clubs have been impressive and have captured the attention of soccer fans around the world.
To reach this stage, Bodø/Glimt produced several surprising results. They first caught attention by earning draws against strong clubs like Tottenham Hotspur F.C. and Borussia Dortmund. With two matches remaining in the league phase, however, their chances of advancing looked slim, as they sat outside the qualification spots.
Everything changed when they stunned Manchester City F.C. with a 3–1 victory, one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. On the final matchday, they secured their place in the playoffs with a 2–1 win over Atlético Madrid.
Their incredible run continued in the knockout stage, where they faced last year’s Champions League finalists, Inter Milan. Bodø/Glimt shocked fans again by defeating Inter 5–2 on aggregate, advancing to the Round of 16 and further cementing their reputation as this season’s Cinderella story.
Next, they will face Sporting CP, and fans are eager to see if the Norwegian underdogs can continue their dramatic journey through Europe’s biggest club competition.
STA Freshman, Jack Cronin, believes the team’s current form could lead to even greater success in the future. Cronin said, “I think this team can potentially win the Champions League in future runs if they keep their form up.”
