The summer of 2024 has been nicknamed “The Year of the Mediterranean Summer.” The extravagance and luxury of Italy, the South of France, Monaco, Croatia, and Spain cannot compare to the true gem of the Mediterranean, Greece. From the ancient ruins to the one-of-a-kind beaches, delectable cuisine, and expensive island fashion, everybody from celebrities to your average American is visiting. Everyone travels across the Aegean Sea; however, not everyone knows how to do it right.
One’s trip to the Aegean Jewel must start in the capital city, Athens. The birthplace of Western civilization, philosophy, mathematics, architecture, science, democracy, and art has so much beauty to offer. Firstly, the ancient city is famous
for one 3,330-year-old structure that everyone knows, the Acropolis. A fortification upon a hill is a must-see for anyone interested in historic sights. When walking to the top, be prepared for the bright sun combined with the 500-foot climb. Secondly, the capital city is home to one of the largest markets in Greece, Monastiraki Square. It may sound like an average Balkan market, but the products range from designer clothing to iconic spices. One shop worth noting is Leticia, which has gorgeous, one-of-a-kind dresses and jewelry, all designed and produced in the heart of Athens.
A trip to Greece is not truly a trip to Greece without experiencing one of the 6,000 Greek Islands. The islands genuinely fit the cliche in the classic musical Mamma Mia, from crystal clear waters, bright florals, and stark white buildings with blue caps. The best island by far is Paros, located south of Mykonos. Paros is a nearly hidden paradise that only gained popularity last year. The private beach clubs are highly notable, not just for their sparkling, turquoise water but for the black sands.
The beaches are the perfect place for soaking up the καλοκαιρινός ήλιος (summer sun). One of the most impressive is the Cosme Beach Club, which has luxury dining and prime relaxation.
Lastly, Greek food is one of the most paramount parts of Greek culture. It contains bold flavors and fresh ingredients. While in Greece, one cannot miss out on piping hot saganaki (seared feta with lemon), hearty moussaka (eggplant and minced lamb lasagna), loaded gyros (pita with vegetables, tzatziki, and chicken or lamb), and of course sweet baklava (flaky filo dough with layers honey and pistachios). A fantastic restaurant containing the Greek classics is on the island of Corfu, Natalie’s Taverna—a taverna overlooking the coastline with fresh sea-to-table classical seafood.
Visiting Greece is like stepping into a postcard; every moment is filled with breathtaking views, every step taken backed by rich history, and with a blend of culture and experience for everyone. Whether you are a history buff, looking for a relaxing beach getaway, or excited for Aegean beauty, Greece has something special for everyone. Pack a suitcase, purchase a ticket, and prepare for the trip of a lifetime.
