After almost a decade, Stranger Things has officially reached its final chapter. Netflix released the fifth and final season in three parts. Four episodes premiered on November 26, 2025, followed by three episodes on December 25, 2025, and the series finale debuted on December 31, 2025, both on Netflix and in select theaters. While many fans were emotional about saying goodbye to the beloved series, reactions to the ending were mixed, which sparked widespread debate and intense online theorizing about whether the show was truly over.
In the days following the finale, conspiracy theories began circulating on social media claiming that Netflix would secretly release an alternate ending one week later. These rumors quickly spread across platforms like TikTok and X, convincing millions of fans that a hidden finale existed. On Wednesday, January 7, 2025, fans flooded Netflix attempting to log in and search for the rumored episode, overwhelming the streaming service and causing temporary outages for some users.
Forbes staff member Mary Whitfill Roeloffs explained the situation, stating, “…Fans of ‘Stranger Things’ swarmed the streamer in anticipation of an alternate series finale they thought would drop one week after the show’s end, despite warnings from the show’s creators there was no such episode coming.” Despite repeated statements from the Duffer Brothers confirming that the finale was definitive, speculation continued to fuel mass logins and online confusion.
Students also shared their reactions to the finale and the rumors surrounding it. Junior Arianna Lizzul said, “My favorite part of the Stranger Things finale was when Joyce and Hopper got engaged at Enzo’s. I did not expect the ending because I thought Eleven would survive, and I do not think there will be a secret finale.”
Although the rumored episode never appeared, the incident demonstrated the massive cultural impact Stranger Things has maintained throughout its run and how deeply invested fans remain, even after the show’s conclusion. For fans who are craving more, a behind-the-scenes documentary was released on Netflix on January 12th, One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5.
