One of the most stressful parts of high school is applying for college. Many underclassmen seek tips to make this a less stressful experience–and who better to help than our current STA seniors? Here are some key pieces of advice from our fellow senior Raiders.
- Work on your college essay as early as possible – According to many students, like Michelle Summers, the CommonApp essay has been the most stressful part of the process. Choosing a topic, writing it, and editing it can take weeks, so it is a good idea to give yourself enough time to be able to do it well with minimal stress.
- Use your resources – Many students, including senior Jaedyn Slaick, recommend going to your counselor for help with applications. Your guidance counselors can give you valuable advice on your essays, extracurricular activities lists, and help you stay organized.
- Form a relationship with your teachers – It is best to ask teachers who know you well for recommendation letters. This way, they can make personal anecdotes from your interactions that are meaningful and passionate.
- Explore your passions – Getting involved in activities that you are passionate about demonstrates interest in colleges and allows you to learn more about majors you might be interested in. One senior said that he “discovered his passion for medicine” by joining different school clubs until he found the best fit.
- Research and tour schools – As a senior myself, I have toured over 15 schools, allowing myself to learn which feels like the best fit for me. Many other seniors agree that touring a school allows you to get a glimpse into life on campus and simulates how you would feel if you attended. Join clubs and get leadership positions – Joining clubs in your early high school years will make it easier for you to run for leadership positions. Leadership positions will help you show initiative and add to your CommonApp activities list.
- Take care of yourself – Always remember to get enough sleep and take care of yourself! Prioritizing both physical and mental health is important during a stressful time like college applications.
From all of STA’s seniors, we hope these tips will help the underclassmen make the most of high school and tackle college applications with confidence.
