Every year, Veterans Day falls on November 11th. America celebrates Veterans Day to thank veterans for their service, sacrifice, and patriotism they have put into the land of the free by acknowledging their contributions to the nation’s security and freedom. The United States comes together every year to show appreciation for the amount of dedication and love that these individuals have shown for U.S. citizens and the country itself. Veterans have worked in the armed forces, which includes the United States Air Force, Army, Navy, Space Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and many more. Junior, Isabella Albensi’s grandfather, served in Vietnam as an Air Force officer. From his experience, he said, “The bright spot was helping organize a Christmas toy drive for Vietnamese orphans who we worked with. Most of the time I missed my family. We got to learn to live in peace. Every war has a special curse. In Vietnam it was Agent Orange. Agent Orange has killed many veterans; others are suffering from cancer caused by it, and the Vietnamese people are still being affected by it, including birth defects. Due to the atomic bomb, we need to learn to live in peace or perish.” He later joined a group called Veterans for Peace.

There are many ways Americans show their appreciation during Veterans Day around the country. A few are saying “Thank You Veterans” by showing up, donating to Veterans charities, putting up an American flag, asking Veterans about their survival, writing letters, and visiting Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals. The observance of this holiday includes ceremonies and parades. It is a time to recognize and appreciate veterans and their families. Many of these veterans carry physical scars of battle while still holding themselves with pride and resilience. Their bravery is a reminder that freedom is not free or just handed to you; it’s earned through dedication, time, and effort. Veterans Day also serves as a reminder for future generations. It teaches the importance of service, respect, loyalty, and unity to those who defend the nation. By honoring them, Americans keep their spirit alive and continue the mission of protecting the freedom they fought for. It is the duty of Americans to never forget their service and to always stand together in appreciation for those who have risked their lives for the country.
