At the start of the school year, students begin with very high grades because they are motivated and want a fresh start while also excelling. As the school year progresses, especially by the second semester, the initial energy that everyone began with often fades out. This period is known as the ‘Second Semester Slump.’ This is a time when students tend to shift from focusing on work to feeling lazy and not wanting to put in any effort. Instead of caring about grades, they just want to have fun, chill, and are “done” with school.
There are three main reasons for the slump. Primarily, for most students, the second semester begins after a two-week-long holiday break. This causes many students to come back tired, reminiscing on the fun they had throughout the break. In addition, academics get harder. For the first half of the year, the curriculum is building, not starting off at a high level of difficulty. By the second semester, students tend to struggle with the academic difficulty arising. For the past few months, students have been working on tons of homework, studying for several tests and dealing with extracurricular activities as well. Students get burned out from this which can cause them to lose the ability to focus in school and stay eager to excel.
Preventing the 3rd quarter slump is challenging but there are ways to help get back into the flow. Choosing to make an effort can make the difference in both grades and motivation. It can help students to flow back into school work and activities steadily. After coming back from the break, doing hours of homework might feel impossible. Managing mental health can help students not get overly stressed. This includes taking breaks, allowing themselves to get good sleep, and making time for themselves to be motivational. Improving mental health can help students academically by allowing them to dedicate themselves. It is important to get back into daily routines. Many students have responsibilities, for example sports, jobs, homework, etc., which can cause them to struggle to keep up in their classes. Having a routine can solve this problem by learning how to have time management. If done correctly, students will be able to have time to participate in their activities while being stress free.
According to Third Quarter Slump, 83.3% of the students said they performed the worst in the third quarter. “Teachers also start to keep their rules stricter and late work is less accepted.” This point has value. Teachers tend to become harsher towards the end of the year, especially after the long break. This can cause lots of pressure on students to keep up with schoolwork and also have fun.
Students have mixed feelings returning to the classroom after their two-week winter break. Junior Carlton Weaver says “I feel good going into the third quarter and not overwhelmed because I know everything will work out fine. I did really well last semester and that keeps me very motivated.” Contrarily, Junior Maddie Meltz disagrees saying, “Coming into the third quarter after break, I am having a hard time adjusting back to school and I feel slightly overwhelmed with schoolwork. I’m trying to work in increments to prevent overstimulation and quit.”
