At 7:00 p.m. on January 7th 2025, the St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ soccer team traveled to Doral and played against the Doral Academy Firebirds. The Raiders, still being undefeated, played their 14th game of the season after defeating Vandergrift on their Texas trip.
For the past few years, the STA girls have struggled to defeat Doral Academy. Last year, they tied them 1-1 and the year before, they lost 2-1. With this in mind, these Raiders came in with a goal of reprisal. “We knew we would have to be aggressive to win the game,” explained senior Miranda Dumornay.
They all were determined to come out with a win, and that is exactly what they did. The girls had a shutout, winning the game 4-0. Sophie Barnes scored 2 goals, and Bianca Raskin and Brooklyn Burbridge scored 1 each.
This goes to prove that hard work and a good mindset can determine a positive outcome. The player that stood out most in the game was Miranda Dumornay, who plays the midfield position. Coach Bryan Hantak, the head coach of the Varsity Girls’ Soccer Team, gave her the MVP of that match, and it was well deserved. She controlled the midfield and did not let anything pass her. She also created many opportunities for her team to score. The team remains undefeated as they move towards the final games of the season.
