On November 5th 2024, the St. Thomas Aquinas Girls’ Varsity Soccer team played against Jupiter at the Brian Piccolo Stadium at 8:00 p.m. This was their first game of the 2024-2025 season after coming off a record of 13-5-2. Last year, they beat Jupiter 4-1.
The Raiders dominated the game and won 2-0. Both goals were scored by Sophie Barnes. The first one was off of a set piece corner that the girls have been working on in practice. Miranda Dumornay passed the ball to Giuliana Kostick. She faked the shot, Sophie Barnes came running behind her and shot the ball into the goal. On the second goal, Madison Poleo cleared the ball from the defensive third and Sophie Barnes ran onto it, dribbled it down the field, and kicked the ball past the goalie to score a goal for STA.
Overall, the girls came out ready to play their first game of the season. They worked together to keep possession of the ball and the defense did not let anything go through them. Centerback Dakota Harrell was awarded the MVP of the game by Coach Hantak because of her work ethic and for not letting any of the opponents cut through the defense. “My hopes for the rest of the season, ultimately, are to win states” and “for the team to continue to grow together and keep winning.” Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Soccer Team for their first win!
