Saint Thomas Aquinas is known for dominating the high school sports arena. STA is mostly known for its national champion football team which has produced 30+ NFL players; however, its other sports are not to be disregarded. STA is also well known for basketball, lacrosse, soccer, track and field, sailing, volleyball; the list goes on. But why is our school’s success in sports so important? It is important due to the fact that it brings our school community together and strengthens our Raider pride.
STA has one of the most supportive fan bases in Broward County. The fan sections at games are always full of students and energy. Each home football game also has a theme, where students dress in line with the selected theme, which further builds a sense of community in the bleachers. Thanks to the Rowdy Raiders, STA’s bleachers are never empty as they cheer and show their STA spirit. Another example of STA’s supportive fan base is fan buses. Students have the opportunity to join a fan bus and cheer a STA team that is going to states or nationals. On December 9th, STA students did just this by riding up to Tallahassee on STA fan buses to show their support for our dominating football team.
Every morning at STA, athletes are congratulated on the morning announcements to further show their support. When asked about STA’s supportive fanbase, Junior Mariano Veiga, a member of the sailing team, stated, “It really brings our school together with students and staff members encouraging each other, and all the different games and events.” Saint Thomas Aquinas continues its traditions through building school spirit by hosting pep rallies, announcing players accomplishments, and showcasing our community building events. Together, STA continues to make history through its motto: Faith. Family. Tradition.
