Why is it Important for C.A.R.E?

Everyone has heard of the disease Cancer. In one way or another everyone’s lives have been affected by this horrible disease. That is one of the many reasons why Cancer awareness is a very important yet sensitive topic. Here at STA one club, in particular, specializes in spreading awareness. The C.A.R.E. Club at STA, which stands for Cancer Awareness Raider Edition, is not only focused on spreading awareness of many different types of cancer but they are also on raising money for cancer research. Additionally, they bring joy and/or distraction to kids who are currently fighting cancer

This club was formed by students, Kella Coe and Ryan Becker, and teachers, Mrs. Marianne Jones and Mrs. Jeannie Borowski, during the 2008-2009 school year. They formed this club after they realized that kids their age, fighting cancer, didn’t get to experience “normal” high school things. Unfortunately, due to a lack of interest and participation in the club, it failed to gain traction. In 2012 or 2013 two students here at STA, Valentina Baranga and Lauren Enten, brought back the club. “They were great leaders and set a new standard for participation and leadership that has continued and evolved to what we have today.”(Mrs. Jones,  CARE Club Moderator)

Today the C.A.R.E. Club helps spread awareness by sending out monthly fact sheets and quizzes about different cancers. Students can read the document and answer the form using that information. The C.A.R.E. Club gives each student a service hour for answering the form correctly. Students not only gain service hours, but they also educate themselves on the different types of cancers. These fact sheets are made by students for the students. Another way they spread awareness about cancer and raise money is the Relay For Life. The C.A.R.E. Club invites students and alumni to the Brian Piccolo Stadium on STA’s campus to walk for a cause. To read more about the Relay For Life: https://www.raiderreview.org/2022/03/29/relay-for-life/

Overall this club has made an impact on countless students and alumni at STA. “So many of us have friends/family that have been touched by cancer and C.A.R.E. provides a way to honor them. I’m so proud of our club and all their efforts over the last few years. Our members are creative in coming up with different ways for us to live our mission. And especially the last two years, they have found ways to involve more of the student body…”(Mrs. Jones)
