Reduce, reuse, recycle. OH MY! On August 28th, the Eco-Raiders Club hosted their first meeting of the year where they introduced new and former members to this year’s exciting projects and events. President of Eco-Raiders, Jessica Jara, introduced herself to students and outlined why this club is important to her. “We are living out the consequences of previous generation’s actions so it is up to us to take action and build towards a better future. I want students to take away a better sense of self-awareness of actions they take towards the environment.”

The Eco-Raiders Club has a wide variety of projects and goals that members are striving to achieve this year. One of these projects includes the Eco-Raiders Mat Project. Through this project, students reuse plastic bags to create mats for the homeless around Ft. Lauderdale. Many unhoused people lack a clean surface to lie or sleep on. With these mats, they will have something to rest on. This project allows students to reuse materials while also helping their community. The Eco-Raiders also host a celebratory week full of activities and challenges to commemorate Earth Day. During this week, students will have the opportunity to participate in the club’s social media challenge, cafeteria trivia, and chalk art competition. This year’s Earth Week will be held beginning April 22, 2024.

Building sustainable habits within STA’s school community is one of the many goals Eco-Raiders hope to achieve. Jessica Jara stated, “Our goals as a club are to promote sustainable habits within our school community. As individuals develop sustainable habits, we can further translate our impact into the world. Taking care of the environment is very important to me, especially as a person of this younger generation.” From recycling plastic bottles in the cafeteria to switching to reusable water bottles are all ways our school community can develop environmental habits to apply to our everyday lives.
