About a month ago, Apple released the iPhone 15 to the public, attracting thousands of people to its storefront and website. The iPhone 15 comes in several models and 5 colors, including pink and light blue. However, on a superficial level, aside from the color options and USB-C charging, the iPhone 15 doesn’t appear to be different from the previous iPhones. It features the same camera, appearance, dynamic island, and glass back as the previous iPhones.
While some sources say the iPhone 15 is a major upgrade from previous versions, others say there is no reason to purchase this device. Many individuals say the best option for purchasing a new phone right now is the Samsung flip phone. This phone is pocket-sized, unique, equipped with a good camera, and water resistant. While there seems to be many benefits to this phone, the cons include the durability of the folding screen, which can crease and break, and the weak battery life. Another grievance for some people is the appearance of the phone. Although these grievances have been increasing, many students are reluctant to give up their Apple products. A senior who bought the iPhone 15 said, “I just don’t like the aesthetic of any other phones,” which most people can relate to.
One person who is against the iPhone 15 is an STA Statistics teacher who has a Samsung. She asserts that her Samsung phone features are arguably better from a camera with a 100x zoom to the ability to split your screen between games and TikTok. On the contrary, a freshman argues that there is no need to use 100x zoom and that iPhones “look better and cooler.” He also mentioned that iPhones are coming out with the split screen feature, admittedly copying Samsung.
While there are many compelling reasons to get a Samsung, many students at STA prefer their iPhones. Kate Koontz, a junior, was one of these people: “I don’t think I would ever change to an Android; I already have AirPods, a Mac, and an iPad, so getting a Samsung phone would ruin that.” Another junior agreed that getting a Samsung was unlikely for him and that even though “the features on Samsung might be better,” he “could never be caught with an Android.”
Despite various reviews, many have said that if you have an older iPhone such as the iPhone 8, then getting the latest 15 would be a big upgrade. There are also many other options out there for phones that are just as good as the iPhone but better priced. What are your thoughts on the new iPhone versus its competitors?
