The Eco-Raiders Club is one of the most active organizations on the Saint Thomas Aquinas High School campus, working hard to make a difference for both the environment and the community. Their main project this year has been the “MAT Project,” in which students turn used plastic bags into sleeping mats for people experiencing homelessness. These mats provide warmth, comfort, and a clean place to rest while also helping reduce plastic waste that would normally end up in the trash.

Delfina Hernandez, club president and 12th grader, explained why this project matters. Hernandez said, “We saw that plastic bags, something that is usually thrown away, could be transformed into durable mats that provide warmth and comfort.” For her, the project is not just about recycling but also about helping people in need. She also shared how rewarding it feels to see the finished mats given directly to those who need them most.
Diane Enten, the club moderator, shared some of her goals for the club this year. She said, “The club serves the community to become ECO-conscious. We are reaching out to other high schools to initiate similar MAT projects in Broward County.” The club is also planning to sponsor “Earth Week” events and hopes to start a recycled clothing drive on campus.
Both the president and moderator agree that teamwork keeps the club moving forward. Hernandez explains, “We keep our members motivated by reminding them of the bigger picture: each bag they cut or mat they weave directly impacts someone’s life.” Her words show how important the project is and how every member’s effort matters. The Eco-Raiders Club continues to show that with teamwork, creativity, and care for others, even small actions can make a big difference.
