On the morning of October 3, 2024, student club members of STA Serves took off on a meaningful trip to Cross Catholic Charities, an organization dedicated to providing aid for elders around the world. Once a month, STA Serves members have the opportunity to give back to the community by participating in this service project. The visit’s intention is to instill values of compassion and kindness. STA Serves is committed to showing their commitment to living out their faith through service. This mission grants students the opportunity to gain responsibility by supporting organizations in the community and enhancing their leadership skills.
Upon arrival in Wilton Manors, students were greeted by staff members of Cross Catholic Charities. This organization provides social opportunities for adults living in a variety of care circumstances. They share on their website, “Our Adult Day Care provides services to seniors living independently and with loved ones by providing an environment where they can socialize with other seniors and receive case management services appropriate to their individual needs.” The members of the club have the opportunity to meet the participating elderly. The activities the elders participate in are games which stimulate cognitive functioning, field trips to local restaurants and museums, and safe movements and exercises. Club members do activities with the elders such as making arts and crafts, praying, and eating a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
Being patient and understanding has an important role in this service opportunity. Many of the elders at Cross Catholic Charities struggle from Alzheimer’s, dementia, and bipolar disorder. Students at the center assist with certain tasks to help the elders grow in their strength and memory. The goal is to make them feel welcomed and important. Students of STA Serves dedicate time, effort, and commitment to help community organizations throughout South Florida, and Cross Catholic Charities is one of many service opportunities provided for the altruistic members.
