“Music is forever; music should grow and mature with you, following you right on up until you die.” — Paul Simon. At Saint Thomas, the students have had their own music accompanying them throughout their school days. This music has been brought to them by their very own Crossroads. Crossroads is a group of dedicated musicians at STA lead by Mr. Wisnoski and Mrs. Forney. These musicians accompany the school’s masses with beautiful songs and wonderful talent, bringing each mass to life.
As a group, Crossroads has grown close as musicians, but more notably as friends. Each student has expressed a love and gratitude for all the other students, and for being able to do what they love most with other people. The moderators share a similar mindset. Mr. Wisnoski has a deep appreciation for every one of his students and their passion: “The best part is collaborating with such a diverse group of student and faculty musicians who are passionate about music and willing to encourage each other to be their best!”
What Music is All About
Crossroads isn’t just singing and playing instruments. The students grow closer to their faith throughout every song, while also leading their school to do the same. Their music is incredibly moving and impactful to everyone, whether it’s the people listening or the musicians themselves. Caroline Lo Presti, junior who has been a part of Crossroads since freshman year, says that “being able to help somebody through a simple song with whatever they might be going through” is her favorite part of being a part of Crossroads. This effect is made clear when the congregation joins in song. Building the Raider community through music is just one of the amazing impacts Crossroads has on Saint Thomas Aquinas!
Their growth in their faith doesn’t just happen in the masses, it happens throughout every single rehearsal. The rehearsals are filled with learning and laughter for students and teachers alike. While learning their melodies and harmonies, they still can have fun along the way. On top of that, the group is very close. They all support each other as musicians, but more importantly as friends. When these musicians get together twice a week, the friendships they make and experience is a revelation of God’s love in itself.
A New Rhythm
Last year, Crossroads had to give their farewells to their moderator, Mr. McCormack. Despite missing him deeply, the students still love their new teachers. Mr. Wisnoski and Mrs. Forney share this same sentiment towards their students. Throughout my interviews, the teachers couldn’t stop mentioning the immense talent of their students. Along with this, both Mr. Wisnoski and Mrs. Forney have lots of plans for the future of Crossroads. One of these plans is a vocal showcase at the end of the year. This showcase is for family and friends to highlight every ounce of work the students have put in.
