On October 19th, the STA track was filled with nearly 200 bittersweet supporters of the Raiders Walk for Angels, raising funds and awareness for those affected by the untimely loss of a child. The event raised $2,720 for Healing Hearts.

The Walk For Angels is meant to be a happy time of remembrance for individuals who lost their children. Participants walk around the track for several laps in solidarity for the family members who underwent the indescribable struggle of losing a child. According to the walk’s organizer, Mrs. Kalis, the first walk took place in 2014 with the help of Laura Simmons, Coach Harriot, and Stacey Rosonow. It came to a halt in 2017 with the renovation of the track, but it has made a triumphant return this year.

Posters were set around the track, calling attention to the individuals being honored and remembered. As participants walked by, their stories were brought to life, touching the hearts of people they knew, personal and estranged alike.

Many participating students added the walk to their workout for volleyball or other athletic training. Others took the opportunity to use this for their “me-time” outdoors. Mothers, fathers, and other adults attended the event to show support for grieving hearts. Don’t be mistaken: although the walk may seem solemn, it is also a time to celebrate the lives of the sons and daughters who have left us.

After a few hours of walking, dancing, and talking, the closing ceremony rounded out the activities. Participants were called to the center of the field, on the golden “A,” for a picture. Mrs. Kalis and other Raiders were pleased with The Walk for Angels’ return to the STA field, and the tradition is sure to continue for many more years.
