Social Media in Schools

Since the beginning of the new 2024-2025 school year, Saint Thomas Aquinas High School has enacted  an extreme reduction in cell phone usage, limiting students from accessing their applications or, more importantly, social media. Social media can have both positive and negative effects on the human mind. Some believe  STA’s rules keep students from being exposed to the different dangers social media platforms have. Scientists and researchers who have investigated this topic have determined that students who had access to social media experienced lower self esteem and more isolating mental health issues, according to  The American Academy of Pediatrics.

Another point of view, is scientists say that a routine was linked with positive health results  while physical connection to social media being; checking platforms due to a panic of missing out was related to the negative outcomes according to;  Scientists say therapy for ‘problematic’ social media use can work too.

Social media may have negative attributes, but it can also act as a valuable source of information and contribution to local or worldwide businesses, schools, performers, and many more. Additionally, it provides a good laugh for those who feel down or for those who need words of encouragement. Sophomore Joseph Murphy said “ It’s a good way to communicate with friends easier.” Sophomore Sophie Barnes said, “It’s a good way to communicate with friends and to express what you feel better.”

If you’re active on social media, be aware of its possible detrimental impacts on your health. Use it responsibly by checking out reliable accounts, such as St. Thomas Aquinas’ Raider Review Instagram page (St. Thomas Aquinas High School)!
