Golf is a very overlooked sport whose athletes do not receive enough recognition for their skill and discipline. Golf requires great mental capacity for the precise shots and correct choice of club for each stroke and a high level of athleticism to fire golf balls down the green.
Although golf is considered an individual sport, the girls on St. Thomas’ Girls’ Golf team elevate each other to create an amazing golf team; second to none. Everyone brings their own specialties to share with their team. “We are definitely a strong set of girls; everyone has their own individual strengths that really makes us a great team,” said Ava Coffey, captain of the girls’ golf team. This seemingly ironic teamwork in an individual sport is what makes this team excel on and off the course.
Everybody starts somewhere, even for golf. You aren’t born with the skills of Tiger Woods; you get there with work and discipline. St. Thomas’ girls’ golf team exemplifies this determination with hour-long practices dedicated to attaining the perfect technique. Vivienne Van Den Berg said that, in order to stay in shape, “We train and practice multiple times a week.” The Florida heat makes these long practice days even harder with its occasional triple-digit temperatures.
St. Thomas is lucky to have such a talented girls’ golf team full of highly disciplined athletes and a passionate coach. This combination of drive and burning passion towards golf has made this team a competitor’s nightmare. As they continue on through their season, the St. Thomas girls’ golf team will continue to dominate the competition and come out on top.
